We are so proud of Halter Ranch owner Hansjörg Wyss, who has been nominated for the @wineenthusiast 2020 Wine Star Award in the category of Social Visionary. What an honor!

Wyss has supported philanthropic causes relating to environmental protection, social justice, and science. His contributions led to the establishment of the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University in 2009 and he created the Wyss Foundation, which aims to conserve natural environments, including public lands in the Wester United States, Africa, South American and South Australia.

We are huge fans of Hansjorg and the magical wines coming from Halter Ranch in West Paso Robles.

Mike and Sandy Davis chose four distinct estate vineyard sites in the Calistoga, Carneros, Rutherford, and Howell Mountain appellations as the foundation of Davis Estates. The 100-year-old wine growing property in Calistoga (which has suffered great damage) is home to their Howard Backen designed winery and hospitality experience, and winemakers Cary Gott and Philippe Melka craft a broad range of individualistic wines of character and finesse.

At 2400ft elevation Black Sears is the highest vineyard on Howell Mountain and is among the highest vineyards in all of Napa Valley. The Black Sears family is committed to caring for the land they love and call home, farming organically and biodynamically in the vineyard. The site barely needs any irrigation with its deep roots; the vine growth is so well balanced in this exceptional location. The clusters are beautiful: loose, with very dark, thick-skinned berries. Being at such a high elevation, the vineyard is situated above the inversion layer, so it is warm in the morning and shaded from the hot afternoon sun. This gives the flavors time to develop while keeping the sugar levels in line, resulting in a wine with beautiful balance.

This Rare and Delicious Spumante is The Perfect Summer Sipper

Villa Saletta is a 1,760-acre estate located in the heart of Tuscany. Its story spans centuries, with the first written account of winemaking dating back to 980AD.

In 2000, Guy and Julia Hands purchased the estate and began restoring its productive vitality, starting with the regrowth of the 22 hectares of vineyards in 2002. This includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sangiovese grape varietals.

Under the stewardship of winemaker David Landini, this revitalisation, along with the diversity of the terroir and an ideal climate, has allowed Villa Saletta to produce a suite of award-winning, top-quality Tuscan wines.

PRODUCTION: 5,000 bottles

GRAPE VARIETIES: 100% Sangiovese

AGEING: 48 months On the yeast, in bottle

The Villa Saletta Spumante is a sparkling rosé made from 100% Sangiovese grapes. Coming from a single vineyard within the estate, the wine is made using the traditional method (metodo classico) and is naturally zero dosage (no sugar added).

The wine is hand-riddled and aged on the yeast for four years prior to hand-disgorging. It is naturally zero dosage, with residual sugar (less than 2 grams per litre) that is less than Extra Brut (pas dosé).

Tasting notes:

The Spumante boasts a dry, lightly structured style. It can
be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif and pairs beautifully with appetizers and other light dishes. Equally, it drinks wonderfully as an accompaniment to first courses such as seafood pasta.

Dunnuck 90pts: There are only 400 cases of the 2013 Spumante, which spends 4 years in bottle on lees, with zero dosage. It has a beautiful bouquet of dried strawberries, dried herbs, and spice that carries to a balanced, elegant, beautifully balanced sparkling wine that does everything right.

From Anna Maria Island to Calistoga: The Odyssey of Seth Cripe

At KJS, we have always been a huge fan of Seth Cripe and the wines he is making. We are so proud to see him shine in this article in the Wine Advocate.

“Old souls have a way about them: they’re at ease, they’re empathetic, they’re suspicious, they pay attention. Comfortable navigating interior and multiple contradictions, these rare birds are interesting to be around. When I meet Seth Cripe for the first time, my immediate sense is that he possesses an old soul. One superpower of old souls is their ability to be seen and to see others; they see themselves as a part of the world, rather than apart from the world. Suspending my aversion for a moment for woo-woo type New Age jargon, I feel seen as a human being by Cripe the first time we shake hands. 

I meet up with Cripe, 41, at the LOLA house in downtown Calistoga, the headquarters and tasting room of the LOLA brand which Cripe founded in 2008. By turns guarded and unguarded, Cripe shows me briefly around the small brick home where he receives customers, before we hop in his car and take off to visit a few of the vineyards from which he sources fruit. Mutually comfortable with silence, we drive along Napa Valley’s famed Hwy. 29 for a time, enjoying the crisp, verdant morning, not speaking at all. Cripe finally interrupts the silence to ask if the temperature in the car is okay.”

Ripe black fruit unfolds on the palate offering cassis, blackberry and black cherry. The finish is long and lingering with smooth rich texture. 92% Cabernet, 6% Merlot and 2% Malbec.

I have supported the development of the dry wine in this region as the quality is absolutely fantastic here.  Condemned to be destroyed by the  governmental land consolidation plan, I was able to save 6 hectares of very old vines - close to 100 years old. After being endangered, Courier is the first message, the first expression of these rescued vines.  My vineyards, up to 100 years old, produce less than 10 Hl per Ha. Hand crafted, this limited 290 cases production of Courier is aged in large barrels for 36 months to bring out the pure expression of the unique Maury terroir and it’s incredible microclimate.
